Do this ONE thing for power productivity

We now have a plethora of productivity tools available to us at a click of button or a touch of a screen. We can order anything we need on-line, track how many steps we take in a day, and set-up reminders for just about anything and communicate from just about anywhere.

With all these tools, it begs the question, why do we feel less productive than ever before? And, what’s really going to create measurable results in your productivity? If you’ve wondered this, I’ve got the hack for you. It’s super simple, but be forewarned – it’s not at all easy.

Create a Distraction-free Zone
We have a RIDICULOUS amount of distractions in our day. It’s a wonder we can get anything done at all. In order to focus and be productive, we must respond with equal force and be RUTHLESS in eliminating distractions – and I mean RUTHLESS.

To make meaningful traction towards our goals, we need a minimum of an hour each day (two is even better!) that is truly distraction-free. This, in most cases, entails a closed office door, phone & laptop on airplane mode, and a short chat with your people (employees, family, and your inner-child that hates to sit-down and work) to set expectations that you’ll be unavailable.

Common distractions (many self-inflicted) to watch out for:

  • TextsThis PIc is only a distraction!
  • Emails
  • Phone calls
  • Facebook & other social media
  • Cats & cat videos
  • Snacking (when not needed)
  • Drinking (when not needed)
  • Doing the dishes
  • Doing laundry and other chores
  • Running errands
  • Organizing your desk
  • Helping a friend/co-worker
  • Research
  • Reading
  • On-line shopping
  • Banking & investing
  • Checking voicemail

You can do this in one hour increments. I believe in you. It seems ridiculously simple, I know. But, it IS challenging, especially if you’re not accustomed to creating a Distraction Free Zone. Think of it like a doctor’s appointment or client meeting – you’re simply not available and your people will adapt.

During the rest of your day and life, continue to be ruthless with distractions. Practice the art of saying no and setting boundaries when distractions find you. Stay focused on your priorities and goals. Your soul and sanity will thank you.
