The Cure to Self-Negotiation

Snooze buttons…

Sporadic workouts…

Sporadic organization…

These are things I used to have in my life. I loathed them. The inconsistency was the only constant. That is, until I finally got down to the root of the issue. What all these things had in common was the bad habit of self-negotiation and indecision. Unfortunately, I was a pro at both.

Self-negotiation sounds like this:

I can skip my workout this morning, sleep-in another 30 minutes and I’ll work out as soon as I get home from work.

Ugh… I really hate bookkeeping… I’ll skip it this week and spend a full day doing it at the end of the month to catch-up.

I’m not sure what to do about that… I’ll deal with it later.

Sound familiar? Sadly, I know these dialogues all too well. These thoughts take up a lot of valuable energy and unnecessary brain space. Frankly, trying to renegotiate all the time is exhausting. I was sick of it, and you probably are too. It’s never too soon to let this bad habit go.

The Cure

The cure to self-negotiation and inconsistency is quite simple: Make a non-negotiable, final decision on the action you will take. Sounds too simple, right? Then, why don’t we do it? The problem lies in indecision (we haven’t firmly decided yet) or not honoring your decision (self-negotiation to talk yourself out of it).

Up-level Your Commitment

There are some commitments you would move mountains to see through fully. Perhaps for you, it’s never missing or being late to your child’s performance, or you’d never show up to a client meeting looking shabby or unprepared.

What would happen if you treated all your decisions with the same commitment you have for the VIPs in your life? How would your life be different if you showed-up for yourself 100% of the time?

Decide today to treat yourself as a VIP in your own life and business. From this point forward, you will honor your decisions and time with the same level of dedication you show to others.

  • If you wouldn’t hit snooze on a client, don’t hit snooze on yourself.
  • If you wouldn’t be late getting your child to school, don’t be late to your appointments with yourself.
  • If you wouldn’t be a no-show for an important meeting, don’t be a no-show for yourself.

Adopting this new mindset will help you eliminate the self-negotiation and indecision. It will help you build self-trust and confidence. You’ll free up all the time and energy you previously spent waffling and negotiating with yourself. It’s like a weight being lifted off your shoulders when you let all that dialogue go.
