What my mom taught me about finding “The One”

After a particularly heart-wrenching break-up, I asked my mom how she knew my dad was, “The One.” Her answer surprised me.

My sister, me & mom

“I was looking for three things,” she told me. “A man who is kind, doesn’t drink too much, and is responsible.” I sheepishly thought about my 100 point checklist that I kept in a mental file for partner qualification, and wondered if I was approaching this dating thing all wrong.

My parents have been happily married for 40+ years – a rarity these days. So, I thought I’d give her approach a try.

You might be wondering why I’m discussing dating at all, but I promise it’s relevant to all areas of your business and life. My mom’s advice turned out to be a lesson on clarity and focus. It’s SO much easier to focus on three things than a hundred, and you simply can’t prioritize a hundred different things effectively.

I’ve since applied the Rule of Three in MANY areas of my life:
  • My top three goals
  • My three most important to-dos for the day
  • My three core values to live by

When I simplify to the Rule of Three, I get crystal clear about what I need to focus on and the path ahead. Let me ask you, where can you simply to the Rule of Three in your business and life?

So, yes, I did narrow down my qualities to look for in a date to sweet, smart, and responsible. When I refocused on just these three things, oddly enough, everything else seemed to fall into place. I did find a amazing and perfect partner who meets much of my original 100 point checklist. It was the Rule of Three made it easy to find and attract the right person. Thanks Mom!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you incredible mothers!
